George Condo

George Condo, a prominent painter, fills his canvases with a vivid array of grotesque figures. The exaggerated features of his subjects—bulging eyes, swollen cheeks, numerous limbs, and distorted faces—convey both the fascination and repulsion characteristic of a carnival atmosphere. Drawing inspiration from renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Diego Velázquez, Henri Matisse, and Cy Twombly, Condo incorporates elements of abstraction into his diverse body of work, which spans from eerie portraiture to more geometric and less representational forms. He has described his unique surrealistic approach as "psychological cubism," aiming to reflect the complexity of his subjects, and as "artificial realism," which presents a distinctly American interpretation of European art traditions. Condo's contributions to the art world include participation in the Venice Biennale and exhibitions at prestigious venues like Tate Modern and the New Museum. His artworks now command prices exceeding $6 million at auction. Notably, he began his career as a studio assistant to Andy Warhol and has also designed album covers for Kanye West.
