Barbara Kruger

Conceptual artist Barbara Kruger gained fame in the 1980s for her striking prints that blend black-and-white photographs with bold text. Iconic phrases like “I shop therefore I am” and “Your body is a battleground” are displayed in white Futura typeface on vibrant red backgrounds, paired with enigmatic images from mass media. Kruger represented the U.S. at the 1982 Venice Biennale and received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 2005. Her work has been showcased at Documenta and the Whitney Biennial, and she has held solo exhibitions in major museums, creating site-specific installations at institutions like the Whitney Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Infused with social commentary, her art appears on billboards, posters, and public spaces, and has achieved six-figure sales in the secondary market.
