Ly (Japanese 1981-), 'Luv Was Waiting Here', 2021, unique acrylic on paper, signed; 57 x 57cm (framed)
Auction: Urban & Contemporary Art, 18th Sep, 2025
Ly crafts supernatural characters in grayscale illustrations, encompassing screen prints, paintings, and murals. Her characters' eyes are particularly notable, as they always engage the viewer, regardless of the body's orientation. Since 2015, she has portrayed her character LUV, a self-portrait that embodies her memories and emotions, in urban environments with a skateboard. LUV has also been adapted into small sculptures and augmented reality versions. Influenced by Tokyo's graffiti, Ly uses a graphic style marked by smooth color planes and sharp edges.
