Antony Micallef

Antony Micallef creates expressive canvases with impasto paint that suggest distorted, abstract faces in distress. His vibrant brushstrokes evoke Francis Bacon’s intense psychological portraits, while the thick paint application gives his works a sculptural feel, extending into the gallery space. Micallef also produces paintings and prints inspired by Japanese cartoons. He studied under landscape painter John Virtue, a student of renowned British artist Frank Auerbach. Micallef has exhibited in cities like New York, London, Hong Kong, Berlin, and Geneva, showcasing his work at prestigious venues such as the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Academy of Arts, Tate Britain, and the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.
