Dissident artist Ai Weiwei is known for conceptual artworks that challenge authority and explore the interplay between modern society and traditional Chinese culture. His diverse creations, including photographs, sculptures, films, and installations, have led to conflict with the Chinese government, resulting in his 81-day imprisonment in 2011 and the demolition of his studio in 2018. Ai left China in 2015. Notable works include Sunflower Seeds (2010), featuring 100 million hand-painted porcelain seeds at Tate Modern, and Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn (1995), where he shattered a cultural artifact. His art often addresses themes of mass consumption, individuality, and censorship. Ai studied at the Beijing Film Academy and Parsons School of Design, with exhibitions in cities like New York, Paris, and London. His works are held in prestigious collections, including the Centre Pompidou and the Guggenheim Museum. He also contributed to the design of the Bird’s Nest stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. While some pieces have sold for millions, many are available on the secondary market for four or five figures.
